The South Carolina Society of Anesthesiologists is an organization
of member physicians who are licensed medical specialists in Anesthesiology. After four (4) years in medical school, anesthesiologists complete a one (1) year internship, usually in Internal Medicine or General Surgery and then complete a 3-5 year residency in anesthesiology.

The practice of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine has
come a long way since the days of ether. Today's anesthesiologist is the medical expert in physiology, pre-operative surgical evaluations, surgical anesthesia care, post-anesthesia care, acute and chronic pain management, obstetrical anesthesia, emergency airway management and critical care. Anesthesiologists can be found directing the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the Respiratory Care Department, the Post Anesthesia Care Unit or Recovery Room and of course the Anesthesia Department.
