Congress Passes Short-Sighted SGR-fix Legislation

Congress passed a $40 billion tax cut bill that allows only a 0% update in physician payments for 2007, includes a complex and controversial pay-for-performance program, and rejects a provision that would restore full funding to anesthesiology teaching programs.
Despite strong efforts by the House of Medicine, Congress only provided an inadequate "patch" to the flawed SGR formula.
The staggering Medicare payment cut of approximately 10% set to take effect in 2008 is still anticipated. IN FACT, BECAUSE CONGRESS DID NOT MAKE THE TOUGH DECISION TO FIX THE SGR YET AGAIN, THEY DIRECTED THAT THE 2007 "FIX" HAS TO BE PAID FOR NEXT YEAR, EFFECTIVELY DOUBLING THE CUT FOR 2008.
