Anesthesiology is the Practice of Medicine

The South Carolina Society of Anesthesiologists is an organization
of member physicians who are licensed medical specialists in Anesthesiology. After four (4) years in medical school, anesthesiologists complete a one (1) year internship, usually in Internal Medicine or General Surgery and then complete a 3-5 year residency in anesthesiology. Anesthesiologists are the patient safety experts in Medicine.  They make modern medicine possible.

The practice of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine has
come a long way since the days of ether. Today's anesthesiologist is the medical expert in physiology, pre-operative surgical evaluations, surgical anesthesia care, post-anesthesia care, acute and chronic pain management, obstetrical anesthesia, emergency airway management and critical care. Anesthesiologists can be found directing the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the Respiratory Care Department, the Post Anesthesia Care Unit or Recovery Room and of course the Anesthesia Department.

The SCSA has over 400 member physicians who are private
practice anesthesiologists, teaching physicians, residents, retired anesthesiologists and some out-of-state affiliate members.

The By-Laws, as well as the Policies & Procedures Manual of the
SCSA were developed by the staff and Officers of the organization, and adopted by the majority vote of the membership.
Anesthesiologists practice in a variety of settings and models.  They may be in hospitals, surgery centers and other outpatient facilities. They may practice in small or large groups, MD only practices where the anesthesiologist is the only anesthesia provider involved in the care of the patient, or the Anesthesia Care Team model (ACT).  The ACT is the most frequently seen practice model and includes the anesthesiologist as the leader of the team with the following support staff: Nurse Anesthetists (NAs), Anesthesiologists' Assistants (AAs), and Anesthesia Techs.

Anesthesia services encompass the pre-operative evaluation and preparation of the patient, the prescribing of the anesthesia plan, the performance of invasive procedures, the administration of extremely powerful pharmaceuticals, the monitoring and control of the heart, lung, brain, autonomic and other functions, the performance of invasive regional anesthesia, the management of emergence, and the provision of post-operative medical care.
